The UN says it is closing all its food distribution centers in the Gaza Strip.

The decision comes after protesters stormed one of its compounds to protest the suspension of cash assistance to thousands of families.

The UN on Thursday said the centers will remain closed until it can get security assurances for its property and staff.

The breach of UN Gaza headquarters came after the United Nations Relief and Works Agency said it had suspended some of its cash handouts.

The agency assists some 800,000 Palestinians, two-thirds of Gaza's population.

The shuttering could exacerbate hardship on the isolated enclave's borders.

Gaza security officials have made no immediate comments.
