Huawei launches world's thinnest smartphone

International telecommunications giant Huawei has unveiled its latest flagship device, the Ascend P6. It's marketed as the thinnest smartphone in the world.

The Ascend P6 was launched in Asia just a few hours after its global debut in London. The Ascend shows the China-based Huawei's aspirations to make further inroads into the high-end market, having achieved its biggest successes so far making mobile and broadband equipment.

The P6 is cheaper than the latest iPhone. In Europe, it's priced at 449 euros, or 2,688 yuan in China, where it will be available soon.

To develop its newest products, Huawei hired many engineers from top international brands in automobiles and other industries. It has also invested a huge amount of resources in promoting its smartphones.

The P6 uses the Android-based Emotion user interface developed by Huawei itself, and optimized based on the input of more than 5 million consumers.

Huawei hopes to catch up with its rivals Apple and Samsung, who still dominate the smartphone market. Chairman Yu Chengdong says Huawei received hundreds of thousands of orders in Western Europe even before the official launch. And that should be an encouraging sign.
