At least nine people have been killed as clashes broke out between soldiers and Shiite Houthi rebels on Monday.

Reports say the fighting took place as the rebels surrounded the presidential palace in Yemen's capital, Sanaa.

The clashes are said to be the most intense since the rebels overran Sanaa in September last year.

Heavy gunfire and explosions were heard across the city early Monday morning, particularly around the presidential palace of President.

Medical sources confirmed that at least nine people had been killed in the clashes, including four citizens.

It also said 79 others, mostly civilians, were injured by stray bullets and random shelling.

The death toll could continue to rise as some of the injured remain in critical conditions.
