Designers struggle for surviva

SoHo is not what it used to be a decade ago.

The district was a paradise for artists, one-of-a-kind boutiques and independent fashion designers, but now they are giving way to megastores that keep moving in during the past few years.

SoHo has been gentrified from an old manufacturing zone to a forefront of artistic, fashion and creative industries.

This part of the city has the greatest collection of cast-iron architecture in the world.

The large space and low rents of these historic buildings attracted a great number of artists in the 1970s.

The old-fashioned facade and innovative designers’ boutiques carried on together since then.
