Xi calls for closer China- Asean ties

Earlier on Saturday, Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered a speech at the National University of Singapore.
He said China is willing to promote the building of a community of common destiny with the ASEAN.
The regional bloc, whose complete name is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, groups 10 countries. 
Speaking highly of the history and development of the ASEAN, Xi said neighborhood is the starting point of China's development initiatives such as the "Belt and Road".
He said China supports the growth of the ASEAN and is resolute in boosting friendly cooperation with it.
The president also spoke of the situation in the South China Sea, saying joint efforts by China and ASEAN countries will contribute to peace in the region. 
Xi also talked about China-Singapore relations. 
In front of 450 teachers, students and officials, the Chinese president said Singapore's practice provided valuable experience for China to crack some hard nuts in reform.
He also said he is confident of greater development of bilateral ties.
