TOKYO, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo shares opened lower Monday morning on the yen's appreciation against the U.S. dollar due to weaker-than-expected U.S. growth data for the first quarter of fiscal 2016.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 185.40 points, or 1.12 percent, from Friday to 16,383.87.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 19.09 points, or 1.44 percent, to 1,303.65.

Decliners were led by marine transport, brokerage, airline and automaker issues.
