VIENTIANE, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Southeast Asian nation of Laos appointed a Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), local media reported Tuesday.

Thongphan Savanphet has been appointed to the position, joining Sengphet Houngbounyuang and Khamphao Eunthavanh as deputies in the Lao foreign ministry, Lao News Agency KPL reported.
The appointment comes amid transition in the Lao MOFA with the appointment of Minister Saleumxay Kommasith in April coinciding with the elevation of predecessor Thongloun Sisoulith to the prime ministership of the nation of some 6.5 million.
The change follows a busy year for the diplomatic corps with the chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that culminated in the hosting of the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits and related summits on Sept. 6-8.
