Probe hits Mars, then goes silent

European space officials are hoping to get good news about their Mars lander soon.
The Schiaparelli spacecraft was scheduled to land on the red planet Wednesday.
Officials say it descended through the Martian atmosphere,
But the European space agency has yet to receive a signal confirming the craft safely landed on the Martian surface.
Officials hope to get update on the craft's fate Thursday.
Even if the craft safely landed on the red planet, it will only operate for three to 10 days before its batteries run out.
