Mine Blast Kills Nine In C.China

Nine people were confirmed dead after a blast hit a coal mine in central China's Hunan Province.

Local authorities said on Tuesday that the blast occurred at 1:37 a.m. Tuesday at Zubao Coal Mine in Lianyuan City.

A total of 29 people were working underground. 16 escaped and 4 were rescued. Work is continuing to retrieve the bodies of three victims in the flooded shaft.

“The current water increase is about 1300 cubic meter per hour, that is a huge ammount. We are working out a plan to drain the water, including buying several salvage pumps. It needs a process to restore the water draining system under the mine.”

The coal mine is owned by Tengfei Coal Mine Co. Ltd in Doulishan township in Lianyuan City.
