The death toll from a car bomb attack in Iraqi capital Baghdad on Thursday has risen to over 50. The total injured is now at more than 60.

Officials said this has been the deadliest attack of its kind this year.

Extremist group Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombing in an online statement.

The explosion went off when a booby-trapped car was detonated near a crowded commercial area in Baiyaa neighborhood.

The blast destroyed several cars and damaged many shops and buildings.

The attack came a day after a deadly suicide bomb from a minibus in Sadr City's populated neighborhood. The blast killed nine people and wounded more than 30.

The UN's Assistance Mission for Iraq reported over 380 Iraqis were killed and some 900 wounded in terrorist acts and armed conflicts in January.
