A tree that has stood since before christopher columbus set foot in the united states is coming down.

The new jersey church that owns the tree says it has no choice because the tree is dying.

But as sally ann mosey reports, cutting down a six hundred year old tree is anything but simple.

It might've been a forest, it might've been a field, an acorn fell and this trees life began.

SOUNDBITE(ENGLISH): JOHN KLIPPEL, Oak tree task force

"That's a 180 ton crane lifting segments of the tree as they are cut by the arborist who is going to be elevated up to the cut site by another crane and those pieces will be taken off to the side, laid down and they will be cut up and put on the log truck and be taken away."

The reason for the meticulous process is the historic gravesite here on the grounds of the basking ridge presbyterian church.

With ancient headstones and those of revolutionary war veterans, these historic markers dates back to the 1700s.

Many folks from the community came out to watch..
