Otter Pups Learn To Swim At Oregon Zoo

Added On May 4, 2017

These cute baby river otters at Oregon zoo are getting swimming lessons from mom.

Born in late February, pups Nellie and Tucker have started taking their first dips this week.

The zoo keepers say their mom, Tilly, begins each lesson by carrying her pup to the water's edge, before plunging in together.

Then she grabs them by the scruff of their necks and dunks them in the water. But don't worry. Baby otters are very buoyant.

Nellie and Tucker use their water wings for their swimming lessons.

Once threatened by fur trappers, North American river otters are still considered rare across most of the US.

Their numbers have also dwindled because of habitat destruction and water pollution.
