"AIIB is off to a very good start. We have already invested in 16 projects around regions. We have a growing membership. The bank is very much going in the right direction. We have a high standard in our governance and policy. We have strong support from our members and a lot of enthusiasm from other countries to join the bank."

During the business session of the board of governors, the multilateral financial institution approved Argentina, the Republic of Madagascar and the Kingdom of Tonga as new members.

Though it would need to look over for the first four or five years to properly judge the bank's performance, the vice president says the AIIB had strong foundations and good policies.

He also says the first co-hosting by South Korea and the AIIB of its annual meeting outside China will provide an opportunity for two things.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH): SIR DANNY ALEXANDER, Vice president of AIIB
"Firstly, the theme of the meeting is sustainable infrastructure because our bank has a very important role to play in helping our members develop infrastructure that can be more environmentally sustainable. That can help meet that goal to tackle climate change and implement the Paris Agreement commitment and so forth. That means things like sustainable cities, renewable energy and other green projects will be very green bank. Secondly, we brought a lot of private sector people to the annual meeting as well. Dialogue with the private sector is really important to our institution. To meet Asia's infrastructure gap properly, we'll have to mobilize a lot more private-sector money as well as the money from the AIIB and other international."

Touching on the new members approved by the bank, Alexander says the enthusiasm from new members to join the bank shows a good progress the AIIB has made in the first 18 months of operation.

"The mission of the bank to invest in infrastructure supports sustainable economic development in Asia. That is good for the whole world as Asia has most of people in the world, most of economic growth in the world and also a lot of growth potential. We have to continue to build the institution, develop our program and invest in more projects. The AIIB build its institution that is able to meet the expectations of its members."
