QUAKE DAMAGE TO JIUZHAIGOU REVEALED

Jiuzhaigou county, at the earthquake's epicenter, is a popular tourist destination.

It is known for its ethnic minority communities, mountainous landscape, and beautiful scenery.

Local government on Friday revealed the scale of damage to Jiuzhaigou's national park.

The park has about 20 tourist sites, including plateau lakes, waterfalls and forests.

The blue and turquoise Sparkling Lake may now be a thing of the past.

After the quake, the lake's water has drained out through cracks in the surrounding mountain slopes.

SOUNDBITE(CHINESE) YANG XIAOBO, Local official
"The earthquake caused drainage to the lake. Waters in it fell sharply. We can say that Sparkling Lake no longer exists."

Dislodged rocks are now blocking access to other lakes.

Relief teams are still clearing road blocks and pedestrian walkways which have seen extensive damage.

Helicopters will be used to survey damage to tourist sites that remain cut off by road.

Jiuzhaigou was visited by over seven million tourists in 2016, including 180,000 foreigners.
