Organizers expect as many as 600,000 visitors to the 19-day event.

SOUNDBITE : CRISTIAN LUEF, Hemmer Director
"This is a special year for the festival. We will welcome more than 600,000 visitors and drink more than 700,000 liters of beer."

The festival started with a traditional parade through the town.

SOUNDBITE : NAPOLEAO BERNARDES, Blumenau Mayor
"Oktoberfest began 34 years ago as a way to restore the morale of Blumenau's residents after flooding. So this symbolizes the capacity of Blumenau's population to overcome and to persevere. Over the past 34 years we have worked to make Oktoberfest increasingly better, and to that end, everyone is invited."

The festival also features German music and dance as well as traditional German cuisine.

Representatives of Munich's Drinktec, which is one of the biggest beer trade fairs in the world, also take part in Oktoberfest Blumenau.

Drinktec is working with the Brazilian beer industry over the Brazilian Beer Fair, which will be open to international exhibitors next year.
