UN urges to empower girls

Wednesday marks the International Day of the Girl Child this year.
 
The United Nations urges the world to empower girls and calls for actions on the challenges and opportunities girls face before, during, and after crises.
 
Accordingt to the UN,  the world's 1.1 billion girls are a source of power, energy, and creativity - and the millions of girls in emergencies are no exception
 
UNFPA Executive Director says that because of entrenched gender inequalities, disasters and conflict can make a bad situation even worse for girls.
 
UNESCO Director-General says  no society will flourish and no peace agreement will be lasting without empowering girls in peace-building and reconstruction. 
 
Priscilla Usiobaifo, a Girl-Child Advocate, told CNC the major challenges of young girls in Nigeria.

"One major challenge that the girl-child has been facing is quality education because often time we keep assuming that even where there are no cases of male preference and the girl-child goes to school, but what is the quality of education that this girl-child gets. Most times, because of economic challenges, when there is a need to make choices of who stays in school, they choose the male over the female."  后面不要了
 
Since 2012, the UN has observed Oct. 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child to highlight and address the challenges girls face.
