Speaking at the Global Solutions Summit in Berlin on Tuesday, Maas revealed that he reacted with disbelief when he first learned of the U.S.'s plans.

U.S. import tariffs on foreign-manufactured vehicles could rise to 25 percent under new legislation.

That could add billions to German automakers keen to sell to the U.S.

Maas said it was "obvious" that such a measure would be "especially targeted at German cars."

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken out about how Germany exports a lot more than it imports.

On Tuesday, Maas hit back saying that trade deficits shouldn't become the new yardstick for political relations.
