China's wetland area ranks 4th in the world

Official data show China ranks the first in Asia and fourth globally in terms of its total wetland area.

Data from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration showed China's wetland has a total area of 53.6 million hectares.

According to the statistics, the country has 57 wetlands that are of international importance, more than 600 wetland nature reserves and about 900 national wetland parks.   

In China's wetland ecosystem, there are 4,220 species of plant and more than 2,300 species of animals, with the wetland protection rate reaching 49 percent.

Officials say more than 1.2 billion U.S. dollars of central investment was arranged during the last five years, covering more than 1,500 wetland protection and restoration projects.
