Typhoon Maria makes landfall

Maria, the eighth typhoon this year, has made landfall in southeast China's Fujian Province.

 
On Wednesday, local meteorological authorities said the typhoon had brought gales of up to 42 meters per second at its eye.
 
Fujian has ordered all fishing boats to return to harbor by Tuesday noon and workers at offshore fish farms were required to return to land.

In Fuzhou, the provincial capital of Fujian, schools and factories in coastal areas were closed on Wednesday. Ongoing projects involving highways and ports were also suspended.
