To many, Africa represents a continent of untapped potential.

Yet development is often held back by poor infrastructure.
To address the problem, CNC went to see a Chinese firm, who have spent 40 years upgrading the roads around Rwanda.

To help upgrade the capital's roads, the Rwandan government has turned to a Chinese firm.
The China Road and Bridges company - or CRBC - is renovating around 55 kilometers around Kigali.
Funding is also Chinese - coming from the Export-Import Bank of China.

"I am living here in Kigali, the importance of the road for me is a lot, because you see the road is very important first it helps to facilitate traffic and when the traffic is facilitated the exchange of the commerce or business is easy, also it makes the city beautiful."

SOUNDBITE(ENGLISH): JOSEE MUKAMBABAZI, Local resident
"About the road constructed by the Chinese, it is better for us because before the traffic it was too much, even for the accident there were many here on the road because it's  too small but now we move freely."

The project is just the latest for CRBC in Rwanda.
CRBC's first project in Rwanda was the 160-kilometer Kigali-to-Rusumo road.
After 40 years, it still stands in good condition - becoming a so called "model road" for the region.
Besides laying tarmac, CRBC is also helping to improve people's lives.
Hategekimana Vincent has been with the firm for 35 years.

When I started working here at the CRBC road, I was a mason, but they taught me multiple skills like being a carpenter and even how to do welding, so I have mastered many skills."

Vincent followed his father into the business - and hopes his son will join one day too.
