The "Saline-alkali Tolerant Rice Research and Development Center" in Qingdao, in East China's Shandong Province made the announcement on Monday.

The highest yield of saline-alkali tolerant rice surpassed 7.8 tonnes per hectare, much higher than the world's average rice yield of 4.54 tonnes.
The center's research team launched the project in January, planting more than 80 varieties of rice, including saline-alkali tolerant rice, in experimental fields around Dubai.
Given the experiment's success, the research team and its Dubai partner now plan to plant a 100-hectare farm next year, to test different cultivation techniques for saline-alkali tolerant rice.
In 2020, the group plans to start expanding the planting area to eventually cover more than 10 percent of Dubai's total land area.
