56 people are confirmed dead following a massive road accident in western Kenya.
The bus crash happened at 5 a.m. Wednesday on a highway in western Kenya's Kericho county.
Authorities say 42 people were killed on the spot. The death toll later surged to 56 after additional victims were pronounced dead at a local hospital. Nine of the victims were children. 15 people survived.
The bus reportedly rolled down a valley after hitting a guard rail. One of the survivors said the vehicle had been overloaded with passengers and the driver ignored traffic rules.  According to the authorities, the bus was not licensed to operate at night.
Kenya banned night travel for public buses in December 2017, but the decision was later reversed by court order.
