A military parade took place in Lisbon to commemorate the centenary of the end of World War I on Sunday.
Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa praised the contribution of the country's armed forces to peace, warning that the use of the military institutions for "power games" will not be tolerated.
The president said without the Portuguese military, there is no freedom, no security, no democracy and no peace in the country.
Some 4,500 soldiers and police from Germany, the United States, France and Britain took part in the parade.
