China has become the Philippines' top foreign investor.

That's according to a high-ranking Philippine official at a news conference in Manila on Friday.

Philippine Trade and Industry Secretary said foreign investment, a major economic growth driver, hit about 2 billion U.S. dollars in 2018.

And about 47% of that came from China--- 930 million.

That makes China the NO.1 foreign investor in the country in 2018.

One of China's largest investment projects, an integrated iron steel plant in the south of the country, was approved last December.

The official attributed the rapid increase in Chinese investment to the "improved relations" between the two countries.

Other major foreign investors in the country last year include Singapore, Indonesia, Japan and Malaysia.
