A "Next Generation Electronic Passport System" is expected to be introduced in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in the second quarter of this year.

According to the Immigration Department of the government of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the system will be introduced together with the launch of a new version of electronic passports.

According to authorities, the new electronic passports will include up-to-date security features.

Last year, Hong Kong issued more than 700,000 passports.

Hong Kong passport holders will receive visa-free travel access to Panama and Armenia in 2019, beginning February 10 and March 3 respectively.
