As time has come to the Year of the Pig, dignitaries and leaders across the world are sending their best wishes to the Chinese people.

SOUNDBITE 1 (ENGLISH) THOMAS BACH, President of International Olympic Committee

"First of all, a happy new year to all the Chinese people. Wish them a prosperous and happy year of the pig. And this year will give us the opportunity to celebrate the Olympic spirit even more together. This is why we opened this year here with this exhibition on Chinese art and culture about the Olympic Games, and about the Olympic values."

SOUNDBITE 2 (JAPANESE & CHINESE) SHINZO ABE, Prime Minister of Japan

"I’m Shinzo Abe. Last year was an important year in the history of Japan-China relations.

This year is the "Japan-China youth exchange promotion year".

This year, I am ready to devote more efforts to promoting people-to-people exchanges, mainly focusing on young people. On the occasion of the Chinese New Year, I welcome more Chinese friends to visit Japan.

Similarly, China is also rich in historical and cultural sites. I hope more Japanese citizens will go to China and establish a bridge for exchanges. Finally, I hope Japan-China relations will make further progress in the new year. And I wish our friends success and progress. "

SOUNDBITE 3 (ENGLISH) THERESA MAY, Prime Minister of the UK

"The fireworks are being prepared. The red envelopes are being filled. And, around the world, hundreds of millions of people are coming together to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Across the UK, lanterns are being hung in Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham and many of our other great cities - including here in London, home to one of the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations outside Asia.

The festivities are undoubtedly one of the highlights of Britain's cultural calendar, showcasing the strength, vibrancy and diversity of our multicultural society.

And they're a reminder of the incredible role that our Chinese community plays in British life - from students who have just arrived here to study, to families whose roots in this country go back well over a century.

It's a legacy and a contribution that I celebrated here at Downing Street last week, bringing together leading figures from across our Chinese community - people without whom the UK would not be the successful, dynamic country it is today.

So wherever and however you are celebrating, let me wish you a very happy new year, and a prosperous and auspicious Year of the Pig."

SOUNDBITE 4 (ENGLISH) KOLINDA GRABAR-KITAROVIC, President of Croatia

"It was wonderful to celebrate the Chinese New Year with Chinese friends here in Zagreb. I would like to wish Happy New Year to all the Chinese people in China and all over the world. 'Xin Nian Kuai Le"

SOUNDBITE 5 (ENGLISH) KP SHARMA OLI, Prime Minister of Nepal

"On the occasion of the Chinese Lunar New Year 2019 and Spring Festival, I would like to extend my warm greetings and best wishes to all of my Chinese friends on this happy occasion as they are celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year and Spring Festival and wish all of them good health, progress, success and happiness.

I am confident that this New Year will further motive our Chinese friends to work towards realizing the Chinese Dream of the Great Rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation, and will bring new hope as envisioned by the President of People's Republic of China, His Excellency Mr. Xi Jinping.

I, on behalf of the Government and people of Nepal as well as on my own, wish the Chinese leaders and people every success towards this end.

Thank you!"
