The grand jury of eight people, all accomplished members of the international film industry, will give their decisions at the end of the two-week event.

Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, a four-time Oscar winner, set a record by becoming the grand jury's first president of Latino descent.

"I don't like to judge films, I just want to be impregnated by them and to react to them and to share, and to feel out what real can be the pattern."

American actress Elle Fanning, the jury's youngest member at 21 years old, said she is very surprised and honored to have a deciding voice in the jury.

China has a big presence this year at the festival. Chinese actress Gong Li will receive the 'Women in Motion' award, and Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi will give a masterclass next week at the festival.

This year, the festival aims to pay homage to renowned French director Agnes Varda, who died of cancer in March at the age of 90.
