"The designs of the artificial hives vary with the locations, local materials, and the behavior of local bees. The idea is  to involve the public."

Bee populations are declining dramatically across the globe. Experts warn losing too many could endanger the world’s food supply.

Bogota's bee hive project encourages locals to provide safe places for the tiny insects in their own gardens.

Each hive has dozens of tiny cubbies where bees can come to rest and store their eggs. When the eggs hatch, it's hoped the new bees will eventually pollinate flowers in the area.

"It is not only for us humans but it is also to help the plants. If they don't get pollinated, either by bees or by other pollinators, there won't be any new fruit or any new seeds. "
