If confirmed by the European Parliament, von der Leyen would be the first woman to take over the most important EU post.
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel was elected to be the next European Council President.
Christine Lagarde, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, was nominated to become President of the European Central Bank.
Josep Borrell Fontelles, the Foreign Minister of Spain, was nominated for the role of EU foreign policy chief.
Except for Michel, the candidates will have to go through some formalities first before formally starting their new jobs.
Current President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, said Tuesday's nominations won't be easy to get through parliament.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel noted, however, that von der Leyen faced no opposition in the European Council, which is made up by leaders of the EU's 28 member states.
