Turkey and the United States have agreed to establish a safe zone in northern Syria, a move strongly opposed by the Syrian government.
Turkish Defense Ministry said on Wednesday that Turkey and the U.S. agreed to set up a safe zone in northern Syria, and will immediately establish a coordination and management center for the zone.
The ministry said that the zone is aimed at addressing Turkey's security concerns,?and encouraging?displaced Syrians to return to their country.
In response, the Syrian government rejects the so-called safe zone, branding the United States and Turkey as forces of occupation.
Damascus urged the Syrian Kurdish groups to switch side and align with the Syrian government instead.
