According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature group, the Ziyuan fir tree is a Class-A protected plant and there are fewer than 2,000 mature Ziyuan fir trees in the world.
Researchers recently discovered around 1,100 Ziyuan saplings between 2 centimeters and 60 centimeters high in central China's Hunan Nanshan National Park.
They also found six mature trees of this species.
A reproduction experiment base will be set up by the park to better protect the species and conduct long-term observation of the plants.
