More than 1,000 dogs and cats found new homes during the first Texas Mega Adoption Event which was held in Houston last weekend.

Lifestyles has more.

At least 10 shelters in the greater Houston area brought dogs and cats to the event hoping to find forever homes for them.

With a 25 U.S. dollar adoption fee, adopting families could take the pets home on the same day.

"It's a lot different than your regular shelter environment. And people might have memories of shelters being scary places. This is very bright and attractive facility."

The Santoyo family drove an hour to get a pet for the family.

After filing the adoption paper, the Santoyo family took a new family photo with their new pet.

SOUNDBITE(ENGLISH): NORMA SANTOYO, Grumps' New Owner
"We didn't want to just come here and just grab because 'oh he’s cute.' I wanna know a little bit more about the dog, its personality, so I kept asking a lot of questions. What attracted me the most is that she wasn't barking and lashing out like the rest of the other dogs. When I approached her, what she did was that she put her little face on the kennel fence; meaning, hey, here I am. Cuddle me, I want some love. That's what captured my eye."

The two-day event attracted thousands of people to attend.
