COP25 seeks to boost climate ambition with new actors

Turning to Spain... The Chilean Environment Minister says that the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP25) to be held in Madrid will be the "COP of ambition and action." Lifestyles takes you there to find out more. Although the conference will be held in Madrid due to the unrest in the Chilean capital Santiago, Chile will still preside over the COP25. Speaking to a small group of reporters, the Chilean Environment Minister sets out her country's ambitions for the coming 12 days. SOUNDBITE(SPANISH)CAROLINE SCHMIDT, Chilean Environment Minister "It is time for COP 25 to act. That's not a slogan, but it's urgent, it's necessary for every country. It's the first COP after the Paris Agreement as we move from a period of negotiation to a period of action, so we need to bring all of the actors to the table which will allow us to transform the development model and to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases which cause climate change." The Chilean minister said that her country will be presiding over COP25 for "all of Latin America and the Caribbean nations." SOUNDBITE(SPANISH)CAROLINE SCHMIDT, Chilean Environment Minister "We have to face the needs in our countries and so we have to not only put in net goals, but to implement fair measures which allow citizens to improve their quality of life." She highlighted that measures to stop climate change have to be not only effective but also fair and not prevent the developing world from raising their living standards. A total of 25,000 people are expected to attend the COP25 summit which opens on Monday.
