Shanlan rice has long been a staple food in Southern China's Hainan Province. Health conscious consumers are now discovering the highly nutritious grain. Let's take a look. Shanlan rice was a major crop in Hainan until the 1980s, when high-yield rice started replacing the traditional variety. Today, an increasing number of health conscious consumers are paying top price for Shanlan rice because of its high nutritious value. It has become a high-end staple that is five times as expensive as ordinary rice. As demand for the grain grows, many local farmers are raising themselves out of poverty by producing more of the traditional crop.
