Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin made the remarks at a press briefing Tuesday when commenting on U.S. announcement that TikTok, a Chinese video-sharing app, will be out of business in the United States if it is not sold to a U.S. company before September 15. SOUNDBITE(CHINESE): WANG WENBIN, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson "For a while, without providing any evidence, the United States has stretched the concept of national security and abused its state power to bring down certain non-U.S. enterprises. Such practice goes against market economy rules and the WTO principles of openness, transparency and non-discrimination." The spokesperson said the U.S.'s bullying on some relevant companies is nothing but political manipulation. He saidthe U.S. must not open Pandora's box, or it will suffer the consequences. China called on the U.S. side to heed the rational voice from home and the international community, refrain from politicizing economic issues, provide fair business environment and do more that is conducive to global economic development. Meanwhile, the spokesperson also urged the United States to immediately stop the political oppression of U.S.-based Chinese media and journalists. The spokesperson said for a while, the United States, entrenched in the Cold War mentality and ideological bias, launched one round of political suppression after another against Chinese media. In December 2018, it demanded relevant Chinese media organization's U.S. office to register as "foreign agent." In February 2020, the U.S. side designated five Chinese media organizations in the United States as "foreign missions." In May, the U.S. side limited visas for Chinese journalists to 90 days. In June, the U.S. side again added an additional four Chinese media organizations in the U.S. to the list of "foreign agent." He called the relevant U.S. actions "double standards and hegemonic bullying", saying they have severely disrupted Chinese journalists' normal reporting activities. At the press briefing, the spokesperson also urged the United States to take the concerns of the international community seriously and clarify its overseas biological militarization activities. The United States has conducted activities of biological militarization in many countries. The spokesperson said those activities are not transparent, not safe, and unjustified. SOUNDBITE(CHINESE): WANG WENBIN, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman "We urge the United States to be a responsible party, take the concerns of the international community seriously, clarify its overseas biological militarization activities, earnestly fulfill its Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) obligations, and stop being the only one that stands in the way of the negotiations on a BWC verification protocol."
