The head of the World Health Organization says the WHO wants to see children returning to school and people returning to the workplace, but at the same time, no country can just pretend the pandemic is over.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual press conference that if countries are serious about opening up, they must be serious about suppressing transmission and saving lives.

SOUNDBITE(ENGLISH): DR. TEDROS ADHANOM GHEBREYESUS, WHO Director-General

"WHO fully supports efforts to re-open economies and societies. We want to see children returning to school and people returning to the workplace – but we want to see it done safely. At the same time, no country can just pretend the pandemic is over. The reality is that this coronavirus spreads easily, it can be fatal to people of all ages, and most people remain susceptible."

Tedros stressed that opening up without having control is a recipe for disaster.

According to the WHO chief, decisions about how and when to allow gatherings of people must be taken with a risk-based approach and in the local context.
