Trump's announcement was a step further than the U.S. military's plan announced a day before, which was to reduce U.S. troop presence in Iraq to 3,000 by the end of September, and that in Afghanistan to about 4,500 by early November. Currently, there are over 5,000 U.S. troops deployed in Iraq. As the presidential election looms, Trump has made more efforts to fulfill his campaign promise to bring troops home and pull his country out of "endless wars." Trump has sought a full withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. The war in Afghanistan, which has caused about 2,400 U.S. military deaths, is the longest one in U.S. history.
