"The impacts of COVID-19 have further highlighted the importance of public institutions in alleviating poverty. They not only provide essential services such as health care and education, but also help to formulate public policies while promoting participation and ensuring that no one is left behind. The impacts of COVID-19 pandemic have further highlighted the urgent need for whole-of-government and whole-of-society institutional frameworks to provide services to all, particularly to the most vulnerable. This calls for genuine political commitment at the highest level, transformational leadership and effective institutions.

Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, on same day said that public institutions play a major role in poverty eradication in China.

SOUNDBITE  (English): ZHANG JUN, China's permanent representative to the United Nations:

"Poverty eradication is a common task of mankind, and a primary goal of the 2030 Agenda. The COVID-19 pandemic is having a strong impact on the global effort of poverty eradication. The international community should take it as a matter of great urgency to uphold multilateralism and work in solidarity to promote progress in the global cause of poverty eradication. Thanks to its reform and opening up in the past four decades, China has lifted 700 million people out of poverty, accounting for more than 70 percent of global poverty reduction. This year, China is on course to lift out of poverty all its rural poor under the current Chinese standard, achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on poverty reduction 10 years ahead of schedule.

The webinar, organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs in collaboration with China National Academy of Governance, was held on the eve of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
