The World AIDS Day falls on Dec. 1, and this year's theme is "Global solidarity, shared responsibility." SOUNDBITE 1 (English): WINNIE BYANYIMA, Executive Director of UNAIDS and UN Under-Secretary-General "Last year, we had 1.7 million people newly infected, that's three times above the target we had set. We see that to address COVID-19 and put it under control, so that we can unlock our economies, and to end AIDS, both of them need global solutions, they are global problems. They need global solutions, they need working together. So that's why our focus this year is very much on global solidarity and shared responsibility." She also voiced her optimism that a cure against both could be found. Byanyima also said that as a member of the Global HIV Prevention Coalition, China was helping to move the prevention agenda forward. SOUNDBITE 2 (English): WINNIE BYANYIMA, Executive Director of UNAIDS and UN Under-Secretary-General "China is a country that is showing a good example in many respects on HIV/AIDS. In China itself, we see that it's making good progress in terms of the targets, in terms of putting its people on treatment and in terms of prevention. So China is a member of the prevention coalition and is helping to move the prevention agenda. That's good and it should continue."
